Effort was there, shots were not in loss to Mavericks

Posted on January 02, 2014 by Dave Johnson

The signs were troubling early for the Wizards as shot after shot hit the front of the rim. The Mavericks had similar trouble, but in the end found a way to win 87-78 and prevent the Wizards from going over .500 for the first time this season.

The Wizards can not fault their defense like they did when the lost 105-95 to the Mavericks in November. There was plenty of energy and Trevor Booker pulled down a career high 19 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass.

Wizards Report

Randy Wittman:

"We wasted a good defensive effort I thought from our defensive standpoint, but we just couldn’t get into a rhythm the whole night. Between Bradley [Beal], Trevor [Ariza] and Martell [Webster], the three best three-point shooters [making 4-of-18]. It was just one of those nights. Those are the games you’ve got to fight through. The difference was, they [Dallas] had a tough shooting night too, they got to the free throw line, 14 makes more than us [on free throws]. We’ve got to continue to develop our game to get to the rim to get fouls on bad shooting nights. I think that was really the difference: we didn’t make shots, they didn’t, but in the end they were able to get to the free throw line more.”

Difference maker.

The Mavericks made 14 more free throws and a winning pace was not there for the Wizards. Yesterday on Daily Wizdom we discussed the need for the Wizards to try and run the Mavericks "out of the gym". In a choppy game the Wizards had nine fast break points at halftime. but only two in the second half for a total of 11 points in transition.

Fun fact:

As we mentioned Trevor Booker had a career high 19 rebounds. Last night on our radio post game show the Carmine's trivia question asked who holds the franchise record for rebounds in a game. The answer: Walt Bellamy

Bellamy grabbed 37 rebounds to set the franchise record. In his rookie season, 1961/62 when the Wizards were known as the Chicago Packers, Bellamy averaged 19 rebounds a game.
