Home sweet home for Porter

It is almost the same old routine. Otto Porter Jr. will return from another road trip and go to Verizon Center. The difference is Porter’s road trip was to the NBA Draft in Brooklyn and at Verizon Center the Georgetown star will walk past the Hoyas locker room and into a new life.

That new life is with the Washington Wizards. For the second straight year with the third overall pick in the NBA Draft, the Wizards landed the player they wanted.  Porter is the highest Hoya selected in the NBA Draft since Allen Iverson was the number one pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 Draft.

“I told him when he came here, don’t go visiting anywhere else,” said head coach Randy Wittman.  “Sometimes people get labeled to be a shooter, or a rebounder, or a guy that blocks shots. This guys plays basketball. As a player those are the guys I loved to play with because they make you better.”

In the Draft Room last night Glenn Consor was excited:

“I will tackle Ernie if he doesn’t take O Porter, and I'm close to him right now

Bradley Beal is younger than Otto Porter

Otto Porter is good enough to start right away, love his IQ and he is an adapter, he will fill needs of the team!! Will fit in really well into the direction of this organization.  Skilled!!”

At small forward Porter joins a Wizards team that already has Trevor Ariza who has exercised his $7.7 million option and will be back next season. Team president Ernie Grunfeld also added that Porter’s selection will not impact their approach with free agent Martell Webster. In addition Grunfeld is pleased Porter is joining a young corps that includes John Wall and Bradley Beal.

“I think we have three important positions filled,” Grunfeld said.  “Otto has great size for his position at the small forward, but he can play some power forward if we want to go small. He can also guard the two-guard. He provides a lot of versatility. We have three positions filled with very young players still on their rookie contracts.”

We will visit with Porter on Friday…….here is our chat with him from Courtside Report Draft Edition.
