The Real Martell WebsterPosted on August 13, 2013 by Dave Johnson
By Dave JohnsonMartell Webster seems to always be smiling. He just gets it. Webster believes he is blessed to be playing in the NBA. Beyond the smile Webster is a determined competitor who has faced adversity and now feels at home in Washington.
The NBA journey for Webster started when he was drafted sixth overall by Portland in the 2005 Draft. By January of his rookie year Webster found himself playing in the D-League. He recovered from the slow start to his career with two productive seasons with the Blazers before a foot injury wiped out all but five minutes of his 2008/2009 season.A trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves did not give Webster a new start. Instead he was slowed by a back injury. By the time Webster arrived in Washington in the summer of 2012, he was looking for an opportunity to prove himself. He did and in addition to averaging over 11 points per game became a leader on the Wizards.
Off the court Webster keeps teammates loose with his infectious sense of humor. For the record he does amazing impersonations including Kevin Garnett. Webster connects with fans and can often be seen interacting with them during timeouts.
To get a better sense of Webster I invite you to listen to a portion of an interview I did with him last November.
